About Private Japan Tours

Private Japan Tours seeks to offer something that most modern travel has forgotten: depth.

In a world where journeys are often reduced to lists of landmarks and photo opportunities, the true essence of a place remains elusive. Private Japan Tours deliberately steps away from the well-trodden paths and the itineraries shaped by algorithms and trends, offering instead an experience designed to reveal the hidden, more intimate soul of Japan. It reminds us that travel, when done thoughtfully, is not just about what we see with our eyes, but about what we can come to understand with our minds. The right guide can illuminate not merely the sights, but the meaning behind themβ€”encouraging us to strip away the surface and see Japan as an unfolding story, one that requires patience and depth of thought to truly appreciate. In this way, the journey becomes not just a physical movement, but a mental pilgrimage into the heart of a culture.

How PrivateJapanTours got started

Screen Liberation x Fate

The inception of this venture was anything but ordinaryβ€”Nao’s initial motive was simply to guide a handful of tours each month as a means to liberate himself from screens and embrace the natural world. He recognized the tendency of modern life to confine individuals within the comfort of their homes, and he sought to counteract this phenomenon through his unique approach.

However, fate had its own plans, and serendipity intervened, kindling a genuine passion for the work he undertook.

"As customers found delight in their experiences, I, too, found a fresh perspective on Japan with each interaction. While they posed questions, I was unearthing new layers of understanding," Nao revealed.

hindsight support

Before embarking on this expedition, Nao had spent nearly two years as a freelance writer, focusing his creative energy on Japanβ€”its aesthetics, philosophical tenets, and design philosophies. Before that, he studied and practiced architecture for nearly ten years.

"My ardor for literature and my background in architecture and writing laid a strong groundwork, one that resonated with the individuals who had partaken in my earlier tours. Their feedback instilled in me an inner contentment," Nao confessed.

ENGINE ON

Following a year of guiding tours, Nao’s realization crystalized: it was time to transform his passion into a fully-fledged business, allowing even more individuals to savor the unique experiences PrivateJapanTours had to offer.

"I realized that most guides in Japan tend to share information that tourists can easily find through a quick Google search. I don't think people want that. They want to understand the depth and soul of Japanese culture, with a principle-based approach," said Nao.

In 2022, the founder started PrivateJapanTours with the first Instagram post symbolizing one of Japan's profoundest concepts: emptiness.

In the quiet corners of a Japanese evening, the paper lantern, or chochin, sways gently with the breeze, its delicate washi paper casting a soft, warm glow that dances like fireflies in the night. Crafted with a bamboo frame and often adorned with calligraphy or symbols, it embodies the Japanese appreciation for transient beauty and the harmonious blend of art and function. Whether illuminating a festival path or hanging outside a traditional inn, the chochin serves as a beacon of warmth and welcome, guiding travelers through the rich cultural heritage of Japan. The chochin has been an integral part of Japanese life since the 16th century, illuminating side streets, shopfronts, and temple courtyards.

In the serene embrace of a Japanese landscape, the three-tiered pagoda ascends gracefully, each tier a testament to the harmonious union of earth and sky. Its elegant eaves curve upward, as if yearning toward the heavens, while the sturdy foundation remains firmly rooted in the terrestrial realm.
